hours
Introduction:

Fact: According to the World Health Organization, about 300 million youngsters are affected by clinical depression worldwide and suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 15-29.

The word “depression” refers to a temporary low mood which affects someone’s thoughts, behavior, motivation, feelings and sense of well-being. Although people suffering for depression have always existed throughout History, few people understand what depression is and still today, there are stigmas attached to it (if people are depressed, it is their fault.). In addition, there are people who use “depression” as an umbrella term to describe their temporary sadness, grief or lack of interest to socialize in the moment. Although they are right by definition, it doesn’t accurately describe the condition itself.

Until forty years ago, there was no general consensus about the existence of children suffering from clinical depression among the scientific community. However, the high number of suicide among young adults pushed researchers in neuroscience and psychology to make further investigations on the topic, especially about the causes of depression. They thought that if suicide occurs in early adulthood, there might have been problems during the childhood period or the first symptoms were already present at an early age.

When talked about childhood, many people think about innocence and happiness. It is hard for them to believe that children can be depressed, unless facing dire circumstances (abusive family, war, death of relatives, etc.). Unfortunately, children from any socioeconomic background can be affected by clinical depression.

In this task, you will learn more about clinical depression in children and young adults.
