Introduction:

Most of us express various kinds of emotions, ranging from simple ones like happiness and anger to excitement and disgust. Our emotional state – our mood – varies according to the type of experience.
Shifting one’s mood needs the release of brain chemicals, like endorphins (happiness) or epinephrine (sadness, anger…). The accumulation of positive emotions triggers a positive emotional state, and the same goes for negative emotions.

But what if the brain worked differently? What if the brain ‘decided’ to release these chemicals on its own, and not related to the experience the person was having? That person would suffer unpredictable roller-coaster-like mood swings which would lead to a disturbing low quality of life, impeding social relations; that is how everyday life is for people who are suffering from bipolar and/or cyclothymic disorders.

Here the condition is described with words from a young man from California:
‘The best part of mania is that I’m so optimistic about everything. You could crash a car through my house, and I would reply, “What a great time to build something new!” I am my most creative during this process, so I am doing as much as possible to capitalize on it. Artistic or constructive, I am up for anything.
When I am depressed, I want to be left alone. It is not because I want to be by myself; I want everyone to disappear. I do not want to go anywhere, see anyone, or do anything. It is like no matter what I do, people are telling me I am doing something wrong. So, the easiest way to feel better is to hide.’

Directive:

1. Study files 1-4. 1h20min

2. What similarities and differences can you spot between adults and youth cyclothymia and/or bipolar disorders? Write a list of 10 bullet points (5 similarities and 5 differences). 20 minutes

4. Read file #5 (from page 3) and answer the two following questions: 1h30min

- In which ways the two conditions impact young people’s daily life, especially their relationships with others and school performances, even with proper medical treatment and psychotherapy?

- What can schools do to support children and teenagers with bipolar and/or cyclothymic disorders? Write at least 5 points.

With the help of your answers from questions 1-4, make a poster to present to DI’s from other teams. Send it to the teacher for comments. 1 hour

LINKS FOR VIDEOS (FILE 2)
- Video “What Is Bipolar Disorder? - Understanding the Symptoms & More” from the channel BetterHelp. URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC15kc7eOYw
