Wording:
The task is to learn about the care home system in Denmark and how the young people placed in care homes cope with the trauma induced from their past experiences.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

In this task, you will learn about a vulnerable group of youngsters: the ones which are placed in care homes.

Many youngsters who are placed in care homes not only suffered from abuse while under the custody of their biological family but also experienced what is called “placement disruption”. They go under the care of multiple host-families or have to change care home many times. As a result, it is difficult for many of them to make long lasting relationships with other people, get attached to them or take the time to appreciate the environment where they live or get meaningful experiences. Many grow up with a strong feeling of insecurity and distrust between them and figures of authorities (adults, social workers, teachers…) settles.

As a consequence, many miss important developmental milestones and appear socially and psychologically challenged – hence a high number of them having all kinds of diagnoses - compared to youngsters of the same age, who lived in a more favorable environment. They are at higher risk to develop learning disabilities and drop out from school.

This is the reason why many of them are in small schools or in special vocational training programs like STU.

These are the kinds of students you encounter in your daily work and this is the occasion to learn some more about them. Enjoy!
