Introduction:

The different chapters that you are going to read consist of stories of children with whom Dr Bruce Perry had therapy - the stories are vividly painted, depicting humane pictures of his child patients who had, at one time or another, suffered neglect, violence, abuse, or sexual assault. Perry invites his reader to join him on his journey to understand these situations, which are not only taken as an illustration of the vast array of traumatic situations within which children can fall victims, but also as a way to understand the importance of the nature of relationships people – especially children – form between each other; how such relationships can foster or hinder the brain development of a child and how social networks can be used as a way to support trauma recovery.

Dr. Perry emphasizes the importance of creating lasting, meaningful connections to others as, oftentimes; such trauma also comes with the destruction of human relationships. These stories give another interesting view about the people who are in contact with such children, be they from the Juvenile Court System, from police, doctors, parents or people from the education system, reminding us that their role towards these children is equally important.
As a DI working in a small school, reading these pages will support your understanding of your role toward these children and give you some inspiration on how to form relationships, not only with the youngsters you work with, but also with your fellow co-workers.
