Introduction:
The title of the film “The big African cake” is a metaphor which refers to the way the African continent was shared between the main European colonial empires during the Conference of Berlin in 1884-1885. From this conference, there were many caricatures where the Chancellor of Germany, Otto von Bismarck, is cutting a cake in the shape of Africa into different parts – the colonies – to share with his guests – the representatives of the European states.

This caricature became famous over time, more especially as it conveys important messages which find a new relevance today. In the time it was drawn, it was supposed to mock the increasing political influence of the newly created German empire since their victory over the French Empire in 1870. Over time, it represented the man cutting the cake came to represent the greed of imperialism and the enslavement of the African country to capitalism.

If you look carefully at a map of Africa, you can notice how the borders of the 64 countries look like: straight lines. In Europe, the borders between the different states are determined by the landscape, for instance a lake or a group of mountains. For African countries, it is mostly the longitudinal lines – the set of imaginary lines which cut the equator into a straight angle. This has been decided despite the fact that nobody, either European or African, follows a line drawn on a map to settle somewhere. This has been decided without the local people’s consent. And we still wonder why there are conflicts in Africa.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is an example of African countries severely affected by colonialism and its consequences. Initially offered to Leopold II, emperor of Belgium, as a “hunting territory”, the local population suffered harsh treatment, similar to the slaves during the Roman Empire. Together with what happened in Rwanda, also a former Belgian colony, it is considered as one of the biggest genocides in the History of Africa. Ten years after its independence, DRC faced two wars, related to natural resources, which made more casualties than the Second World War and it is not finished… local conflicts are still going in the Kivu region.
