1. a. Watch Brain 101, National Geographic. URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRFXSjkpKWA<br /> b. The teacher gives an introduction using the intros from the books Spark and Brain Maker<br /> c. Read the following Chapters and present the 10 interesting elements from the content to each other through 30 minute presentations during a study day <em>(5 hours)</em><br /> <br /> - Stress, the greatest challenge (Spark Ch.3)<br /> - Addiction, Reclaiming the biology of self control (Spark, Ch.7)<br /> - Aging, the wise way (Spark, Ch.9)<br /> - Getting to know your hundred trillion friends (Brain Maker, Ch.1)<br /> - Punched in the gut: The truth about fructose & gluten (Brain Maker Ch.6) <br /> 2. Write down 5 main elements in bullet points to show your understanding of each of the 5 chapters with 3-5 lines of explanation for each <em>(2 hours)</em> <br /> <br /> 3. Think about a situation where you were stressed. Taking into consideration how the brain responds to stress, write a short story describing how you experienced that situation: consider the emotional and physical feelings, the amygdala sounding the alarm, heartrate, breathing. Make it the best descriptive story you have ever written. <em>(1 hour)</em> <br /> <br /> 4. You are what you eat! Describe what/who you are in half a page taking into consideration the science of food and the brain/gut <em>(1 hour)</em> <br /> <br /> 5. a. Interview the oldest person at or who lives close to your school. Formulate 3 questions you would like to know from them about their lifestyle and how it impacts upon their health today.<br /> b. Fast forward to yourself at 85 years of age. How have you treated your body and brain in life? What about your addictions – did you overcome them? Which impact do/did they have on your health. Describe in 1 page your journey to aging. <em>(1 hour)</em>
