Introduction:
Traditional historians call the time from 1870 to 1914 the “Age of Imperialism”.

This was the time when European powers colonized Africa, Japan colonized Korea and Manchuria and USA colonized Hawaii and the Philipines and France colonized Indochina.
In this period some of the biggest capitalist companies grew bigger and bigger. It was during this time Rochefeller became the World’s first billionaire by gaining control of much of US oil production so that he could form the company that today is Exxon, the world’s largest oil company.

As capitalist companies established large companies and attracted many people to work in the cities labor movements were organized to fight for the rights and welfare of workers.
When they were met with stiff resistance they grew angry. When war made life almost unbearable they started revolts.
In 1870, France and Germany was at war over rich mines in border area between the two countries. The Germans won. In response the workers of Paris rose in rebellion and created the Paris Commune. The event is often seen as the first socialist revolution in history. It lasted less than 3 months and were drowned in the blood of the people of Paris.

In 1914, when there were few countries left to colonize, the imperialist countries started a war against each other. A major economic issue was control of the oil in what is now Iraq which Germany was about to exploit in cooperation with the Ottoman Turkish empire. The war was horrific and almost 10 million soldiers were killed and many people starved or died from a very serious influenza pandemic.

As a result of the devastating war the people of Russia turned against their rulers demanding peace, bread and power to the soviets (people’s committees). This was the first successful socialist revolution that led the Soviet Union towards more than 70 years of trying to build a socialist country.

After Germany had lost World War I, workers in Germany rebelled and tried to create a socialist system as the Bolsheviks had done in Russia, but the German workers were bloodily defeated.

After World War I, the Soviet Union was attacked by several Western countries, but defeated the invadors. Throughout the 20th century the contradictions of capitalism and imperialism have caused crises and wars.

,
