The task is to be introduced to section 1 “Introduction to the Philosophy of Education”, from the module “Philosophy of Education”
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The section called Introduction to the Philosophy of Education will give you an in-depth introduction into the philosophy of education.

We will explain philosophy in general, in order to then ask the question: “What is the philosophy of education?” And where does philosophy end and education begin?

In this section, the argument for the need for a philosophy of education is put forward. It could be compared to a philosophy for life. Making decisions in life is easier when you have a philosophy of life. Similarly, it is easier to make decisions in your pedagogical practice when you have a philosophy of education.

The first task asks the question why education is necessary. And what is at the heart of educational activity that makes it so necessary? What would happen if a culture did not educate the next generation?

The next task, having accepted the need for education, asks what this education is for. Is it for the individual? For society? Or for the benefit of the ruling classes? The answer depends greatly on the philosophy behind the laws that are in force in the area of education and the interpretation and application of these laws.

The following task outlines the most important trends within the philosophy of education over the last century. You will find out that most trends have maintained the status quo of society, the most recent being oriented towards the economic market. As an example, you will see that Europe has turned into a so-called society of knowledge, where human brains are its main resource. Could it be that Europe moved into this direction because of its lack of natural resources? And as such was obliged to secure another resource to survive in a capitalist globalised market?

The penultimate task in the section addresses the influence that the philosophy of education has on education policy. Neoliberal and socialist trends are examined. The question is whether any philosophy of education can be classified as one of these. You will work with Paulo Freire’s philosophy of education as an example. How would you classify this?

There is also a task that asks who is responsible for making choices about curricula. And what can teachers and students do to guarantee that the content of these curricula is important to them. These are questions that are directly connected to the philosophy of education, which is based on views of life, values and questioning knowledge. It argues that one of the most essential educational activities is to reveal the truth by allowing students to discover lies and omissions. What do you make of this?

The last task is to create the product for this section, which will be a written speech with the title: “How the philosophy of education can benefit the people”. This speech should be constructed according to what you have learned and considered in the tasks for this section. It is good to have the requirements of the speech in your mind when you are completing the tasks.

Good luck.
