Introduction:

The rich part of the world has, by far, been the biggest emitter of green house gasses and through that a decisive factor for the current climate changes. The rich world also has the capacity, money and technology, to do the necessary investments to both mitigate CO2 emissions and take effective actions to the adaption to the climate changes. For some years Europe has been in the front in these activities globally. The economic crisis has though moderated the European initiatives.

This task is an investigation about the European green industries and their importance, regionally and globally, in the transition towards a society not based on consumption on fossil fuels.

&nbsp;

The green industries are a conglomerate of various businesses and technologies, all with the purpose to mitigate energy production, use of resources and pollution of the environment and/or further the use of renewable energies, environmentally friendly production procedures towards a more sustainable production. The variety within green industries is quite big and include energy production from the winds, the waves, bio mass/waste, the sun, geothermic heat, heat from the ground etc., technologies for saving energy and use of resources like water saving equipment and recycling in general and technologies for preventing or/and cleaning various kinds of pollution. Hydropower is sometimes regarded as a green energy production though it can have negative effect on the environment. Nuclear plants are not included. They do not emit green house gasses, but they are heavy polluters with their radioactive waste.

Most European countries do not posses fossil fuels, they have a relatively high economic and technological level of development and they have populations which to a big extent go for sustainable solutions to economic and technological questions. Thus they have had strong incentives in developing green industries. Along the shores of the North sea and the Atlantic, and in the oceans, there are many wind mills, especially Denmark has been in front in this. Solar panels were first introduced in southern Europe but are now distributed al over Europe with Germany as a good example. Recycling procedures are mainly developed in the northern and the western part of Europe, the rich part of Europe. So are technologies for resource saving and anti-polluting technologies.

In the recent years, and especially due to the economic crisis, Europe is challenged as being in the front of creating and implementing green industries. Not so much from the United States who at the moment exploit big reserves of shale gas, but e.g. China who invests quite a deal in developing green industries. South Korea does the same and has recently signed an agreement with Denmark about cooperation within developing of environmental technologies. This may imply that it can be more difficult for European green industries to compete on the global market, but maybe this competition could promote more technical support for the poor part of the world.

European green industries are challenged globally through more competitors and are challenged in Europe because of the economic crisis and thus smaller investments. There is though still a general understanding among Europeans of that green industries and a sustainable energy, production and also consumption sector is important and has to be supported.
