About 650 million small scale farmers most of whom are women, produce around 80 % of all the food that is eaten by people in the developing world.

Still, it is as if small farmers are isolated from almost everything- access to new technologies, markets, access to micro-credit, agricultural inputs and irrigation. The transport routes of products to the market often do not exist. And if they exist, they are usually in poor condition. It does not, however, need to be like this:

In Brazil, local governments guarantee that one third of the food for their school feeding programs are bought at fair prices from local smallholders. The result is that numerous farmers have diversified their crops and increased their incomes.

Also in Brazil, a non-governmental organization called HortiBrasil, gave funding to 500 small farmers for the production of various fruits to supply supermarkets outside of Brazil such as in the U.S. and Europe. This project paved the way for these small farmers to connect to the world and also brought them more income.

In Mozambique ADPP&#39;s Farmers&rsquo; Clubs project in Cabo Delgado Province, families were able to triple their income during the 3-year project period.

As an exceptional example, Aima Seraphim, a member of Farmers&rsquo; Clubs, says: [... I am a member of Club Miez, Metuge District in Cabo Delgado Province. I never thought anything would change life as a result of agricultural production. I am working on a 1.5 ha piece of land for horticultural production with the following types of vegetables: Chinese cabbage, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, peppers and beans. This year I managed to sell products corresponding to US$ 3,600. I never had that kind of money in my entire life as a farmer. Now I&#39;m safe in terms of food, health and education for my children ...]

The reason is that the Farmers&#39; Clubs organize the farmers and train them in new production techniques, such as the use of conservation farming, diversified crops, irrigation systems, and the use of demonstration plots. One aspect that is very important in this work is that they learn to plan and solve the problems they face together.

These examples show that small farmers have to break through and find ways to markets, finance and all the other input they need, and that it has a huge impact when they succeed.
