Introduction:

This task has the character of an experience. 
You take part in numerous discussions and debates as a project leader.

Most people are actually not very good a discussing. It is not a focus in most school systems around the world. Often people choose their friends according to shared opinions and the friendship (or marriage) breaks when there are too many disagreements or things are left unsaid, each stubbornly holding on to &ldquo;I am right and you are wrong&rdquo; &ndash; &ldquo;you never&hellip;.&rdquo;, &ldquo;you always&hellip;.&rdquo; And this starts to undermine the friendship.

Our society is very competitive and individualized. We want to say the right thing and not make a fool of ourselves. We build defense mechanisms. All this is standing in the way of building cooperation and development, which is what we are doing.

If you have a discussion or debate in order to reach a common agreement it is important to continue until everyone agrees. This is a very demanding process. In formal democracies the majority wins &ndash; but this is not our way in Humana People to People! Here we believe it is possible to reach consensus on what we want to do. By listening to everyone and taking everyone seriously and each person taking the process seriously, we can come up with decisions that serve all of us.

Some discussions and debates are not meant for taking common decisions about different issues, but instead intended for each person to get a deeper understanding of a topic, to get more knowledge, to see a situation from many different angles, to raise important questions, clarify differences&hellip;.

Regardless, a good discussion/debate starts with an input &ndash; a suggestion &ndash; the formulation of a hypothesis &ndash; a provoking question &ndash; a small speech with some statements&hellip;. And there has to be a leader initiating the debate, keeping the focus on the topic, summarizing, have more input prepared, making sure everyone is respected and that comments and opinions are paid attention to.

Whilst effective communication is an essential skill for the project leader, most people tend to be over-optimistic about the accuracy and efficacy of the communication process. Achieving understanding can be difficult, especially in the atmosphere of change and new understanding.

Noise &ndash; Anything that distorts the message being transmitted, such as other conflicting messages, can interfere with its meaning.

People tend to listen to what they want to listen to. Ensuring clarity of the objectives and the planned results of the debate is important.

Conflict &ndash; Conflict can act as a wall between individuals or groups, preventing communication between them.

Language and tone is important. Someone who has another and more traditional perspective on the theme you debate, can easily miss the intended meaning of a message if you are not careful and clear when you present it.

Receiving and listening to feedback, as well as imparting messages, is essential for effective communication.

	<li>Decide on a topic/issue for a discussion/debate. It has to be a very relevant issue. Here are some examples: a) How can we keep our community clean and make good waste system we all follow b) Child neglect and abuse is not only a private issue, but a community issue c) How can we support our youths d) Our community do not discriminate against anyone</li>
	<li>Mobilize your target group to come for the discussion/debate &ndash; maybe you give them something to prepare or consider before coming. </li>
	<li>Prepare the discussion/debate and consider how you will lead it. Maybe you can use the attached file having in mind that it is NOT made for a HPP project leader.</li>
	<li>Lead the discussion/debate.</li>
	<li>Write a short summary and conclusion of the discussion/debate and what advice you have to yourself for leading future discussions/debates. </li>
	<li>Send the conclusion and advice to your tutor.</li>
