The world at war is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, and the hopes of its children&hellip; This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp; (President Eisenhower, 1953).

&nbsp;

The military-industrial complex refers to the connection between the military and the large companies that supply the military with guns, bombs, tanks etc.

It is in the interest of these companies that there is always demand for their products.

For this the military need to use their products. Private companies also make large sums of money from reconstruction after war for example in Iraq.

&nbsp;

The arms trade, and the use of weapons in war, is major causes of human rights abuses.

&nbsp;

Basic human rights are denied because governments prioritize military spending over providing basic services to their people. Basic human rights for those in a country at war, or post-war are also denied. Violence in local communities as soldiers move in. Destruction of families as parents are killed (influencing the development of many generations). Exploitation of children as child soldiers.

&nbsp;

Every nation has the right and the need to ensure its security. But can the USA really afford to spend over 700 billion dollars a year on military bases abroad and being involved in foreign wars when many in the USA do not have enough food, or cannot read and write ?

3. Read the article: &ldquo;Iraq and Afghanistan &ndash; what about it?&rdquo; &nbsp;(30 min) 
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;- summarize the effect of the war on the ordinary people in these countries.

4. &nbsp;Watch the movie &ldquo;The War You Don&#39;t See&rdquo; by Pilger. &nbsp;(1 hour 30 min) 
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; - explain how the media use images and emotion and other tools to 
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; promote war. &nbsp;(you should present this visually in a poster &ndash; you&nbsp; 
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; can also use text) &nbsp; &nbsp;(30 min)

&nbsp;5. Present your conclusions and poster to your team or teammate(s). &nbsp;(30 min)

&nbsp;6. Discuss how you individually, or with other people, could work to stop wars
