The task is to learn about the OECD standardised testing and discuss its effects on the pedagogy applied in mainstream education.

Introduction:

PISA, the ‘Program for International Student Assessment’, is a system for evaluating different schools’ and students’ performances, which now covers 80 countries worldwide. Launched by OECD (the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) in 1997, PISA measures 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance in mathematics, science, and reading. It aims to provide comparable data to enable countries to improve their education policies and outcomes. In order to do so, it relies on standardised tests only and contributes to the current tendencies of educational standardisation.

The idea of standardising education and testing doesn’t come without criticisms, though, which PISA faced across various fields. Its very purpose, increasing economic performance, is easily questionable for something that has a notable impact on the educational system of so many countries. Testing standardisation affects global education in several ways, extending from quality education to equity and the capacity of education to reach all students.

During this task, your team will analyse what exactly are the effects of standardisation, and the main criticisms towards PISA and Standardised Testing, and reflect on the issue of standardisation. To what extent is standardisation necessary and useful? When is it harmful? Is it possible to create a standardised system that doesn’t carry such heavy drawbacks? How can future teachers use this knowledge to promote anything different if they find it needed? How could we possibly start an alternative to these programmes? What could be the alternatives and how would you implement them?
