Introduction:
In the recent years, many changes are taking place at an ever faster speed and are becoming difficult to overview. This period can be called Canyon years. Imagine water of a river running into a narrow canyon. The water in the canyon gets compressed and runs faster and more turbulent. In our time, many of the complex forces and trends in the world, built up over the last 100 years, are coming together and overlapping each other and create much more speed and therefore increasing the rate of change more than we have ever seen before. This indicates we are entering a time of transition where different scenarios can manifest. This requires us, now more than ever, to THINK BIG and ACT.<br /> <br /> Over the past 30 years the gap between rich and poor has grown larger than at any time in history. Environmental problems have shown to be serious in many places and most serious is global warming and climate change that is a result of burning of vast amounts of fossil fuels. To maintain its supremacy, USA has engaged in many wars over the past 60 years. Today – Iraq, Afghanistan and 3 undeclared wars - Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3015532/posts).<br /> Will the USA be able to keep its position as the leading superpower in the world?Or will the next century introduce new players on the world arena?<br /> Where are we heading? Well, there might not be one clear answer for the whole world. As new powers are emerging and traditional wisdom is no longer valid. Therefore to understand better what is ahead of us, we will look at four major regions in the world and paint a picture of their situation and where they are going. In the end, we will try to draw up some conclusions and let you make up your own mind as to what you think of it all.
Directive:
<ol> <li>The teacher gives a presentation about global trends in India, Africa, China and Latin America. (1 hour)</li> <li>Students divide into 3 groups, read the files about Environment, Global Poverty and Water & Food and make a poster where they draw up some of the upcoming trends. (1 hour)</li> <li>Students present the poster to the class. The teacher lead a discussion of what are good trends and what can be done to prevent the undesired trends.
