The task is to get an overview of scientific evidence and predictions on how Global Warming and Climate Changes will affect the European continent in the next 25 years.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Climate change is here. If you just open your eyes, it is easy to see that changes are already happening.

These changes are not very big, a storm here, a flooding and a drought there and a heat wave in between.
These events are the results of more subtle changes, changes that are not easy to spot, but nevertheless are very real, when measured over time.

One of them is global average temperature, another one is sea level rise. When thinking of global warming and climate change we most often think of increase in temperature. According to James Lovelock, the most significant indicator of global warming is sea level rise. Sea level rises because glaciers are melting in a warmer climate. The sea level has been rising steadily the last 100 years. This is a sure indicator that the globe is warming.

This warming will have certain impacts on Europe. We don't know what impact, but agriculture will certainly be affected. When the globe warms, agriculture in Northern Europe will expand while agriculture in Southern Europe might decline. In Northern Europe we might use less energy for heating, while in Southern Europe they might use more energy for cooling.
The use of land might change caused by desertification or salination or general soil degradation. Some parts may be prone to flooding and other parts that earlier was forest covered, might get burnt.

Some coastal areas might be prone to flooding caused by sea level rise as well as storm surges. People might have to leave areas where they have lived for generations.

Human health will be affected. Old people who have no air-condition during heat-waves or cannot afford to heat their homes during cold spells, might get sick and die. In a warmer climate we might expect diseases to travel north. We might expect malaria in Southern Europe.

Changes in climate with all that follows will affect habitat suitability. Parts of Southern Europe in Spain, Italy or Greece might too dry for people to live and work. Parts of coastal areas might be prone to flooding. Coastal cities or towns will have to be protected against possible floods. This might prove so expensive that some areas will have to be deserted. Extensive drought might lead farmers to abandon their land. This might happen in Southern parts of Europe.

We don't really know what might happen, we can only guess. The important thing is to acquire as much knowledge as possible, so at to be aware of what might come. Thus we might take action to avoid the worst of the effects. Go to the Instruction to see what you can do to learn more about the effects of the coming climate change in Europe.
Directive:
The task is set to 8 hours.

Read the introduction and the questions and make clear the overall aim of the task.

Read the files. Use additional sources if you find it beneficial. The origin of additional sources must be noted for control.

Product: See no 4

1. Read files 1 – 4 about climate changes and impacts of climate changes in Europe.
The files are excerpts from “Climate change, impacts and vulnerability in Europe 2012” from the European Environment Agency and from “Climate Impacts in Europe The JRC PESETA II Project” from the European Commission.
The complete reports can be downloaded from: http://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/climate-impacts-and-vulnerability-2012 and from: http://ftp.jrc.es/EURdoc/JRC87011.pdf

2. Make a list of the six most important findings EEA report? To answer this question, use both files 1 and 2.

3. Write a short essay, 1 page, about the already observed climate changes.

4. Describe the regional and biophysical impacts of the coming climate changes in Europe. Use files 3 and 4 for answering this question. 2 pages.
