The task is to consider your future work as a teacher: which type of activities and actions point to the past, and which point to the future?
Time:
hours
Introduction:
In many ways you could say that the teacher´s work is under construction.
The teacher needs to be open-minded and have more than one eye on tendencies and movements in the society. The teacher has to be on the move.
The teacher used to be the centre person – the teacher who knew everything – the teacher used to be the personification of knowledge.
Learning and knowledge has always been the spearhead of the new generation and the teacher has been the communicator and the correspondent and messenger to give the coming generation better conditions and better possibilities to live their lives.
In the old days the teacher made the students learn the studies by heart and repeat them in front of the teacher. The learning principle was in many ways copy (what the teacher already had learnt) and paste (pass on to the coming students).
Discipline and respect were fundamental teaching principles to make this happen. These things have changed. The modern and future teacher has new tasks to do.
But at the same time the modern teacher is maybe even more than ever bound to regulations and curricula that he needs to follow.
Worldwide we see that the challenges to the individual student are raising because the global competition is getting bigger.
There is need for training and education on higher and higher levels. The modern societies seek all for specialisation within almost any profession and accordingly the educational training is more and more specialised with more fixed curriculum and lack of flexibility to the educators.
With this development it seems like there is not so much space for the initiative and creativity of the educators. The education is getting more individualised and group work and common goals for classes and students are not demanded and wanted. Togetherness, solidarity and comradeship are less coveted and the ambitions of the individual student fill much more than before because of the tight, academic goals from the authorities.
The competition gets bigger in the run for the individual students to get a good and well paid job.
These are in short some of the conditions the teacher is facing in the learning environments today.
With the specialisation we see that the tendencies are less freedom to the individual: More structure, many more measurable evaluations and exams, individualised education, and the student and his individual learning in the centre.
Less time for group discussions and group work, less time to make the student be the pilot in her own education, everything is governed and regulated from lesson to lesson and the curriculum is more strict.
This could be seen as some of the tendencies on the educational scene.
And it could very well be discussed if these tendencies give the teacher a learning environment where the teacher is the leader to learn and train and teach the students to develop all sides of them selves.
This task is for you to consider your future work as a teacher: which type of activities and actions point to the past, and which point to the future?
What kind of formation and culture and life long learning will you as the teacher pass on to your students?
And do you as teacher see any need to work for emancipation from a fixed curriculum or do you consider that the fixed gives the teacher and the students the best structure to develop.
These are some of the questions you will have to consider in this task.
Directive:
