Wording:
The task is to produce a dream, vision, idea, strategy and plan for how to organize Europe’s millions of youths in creating Open Future.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
What ‘s wrong in Europe?
Especially what is wrong in Italy, Greece and Spain, while it is reasonably good in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland?
We know what is wrong. There are too many jobless young people. We just seem to be unable to do something about it.
Older people have jobs; young people are looking for jobs, often in vain. Why?
Many of the jobs are gone – in most cases gone to China.
Many industries in the big cities are dead, just dead. Production has moved.
Young people are unable to find work. There are no jobs. For many young people there is no future.
A most extreme case of unemployment and misery is found in Detroit – the city of GM, the city of Ford and the city of Chrysler.
What happened?
The big motor companies moved away or automated the production.
People lost their jobs, their livelihoods and their sense of belonging to a society.
With no jobs, no money. In the end the city went bankrupt.
The result can be seen now: abandoned factories, burnt houses and empty lots.
What about people? Many left but some stayed.
What do people do for a living when there are no jobs?
How do they survive?
In Detroit people have found many ways of coping with the city’s ordeal.
When you can buy a whole house for $1, it is not in very good shape. One man cannot repair it. But a group of people can.
When there are many empty lots, garden farming is a natural option.
In Detroit, it has shown that people are very resilient. They don't accept the bad times. They organize themselves and do something about it.
Europe has outsourced lots of its production.
Many, especially young people are without jobs, and without the means for getting a livelihood.
There is nothing for them to do. No money for a decent living.
The situation is not good. Even if the crisis is over, at least the times are getting better; there are still lots of unemployment among young people. Even with a university degree, you might be unable to find a job.
We will have to change the society in such a way that young people can get an education that will lead to meaningful work. Then many people can be able to afford a decent living raising children under good circumstances.
In this task you will learn about outsourcing of jobs and you will learn about its negative effects on organizations. You will also learn about unemployment among youths in Southern Europe and what is being done to fix this unemployment. Still people are both qualified and jobless. You will also learn about some measures the EU is taking to invest in young people in order to reduce the joblessness prevalent in Southern Europe.
Directive:
The task is set to 8 hours

Read the introduction and the questions and make sure you understand the overall aim of the task.
Read ALL the files.

How to use this task:

Variant 1.
You can solve the task individually by answering all the questions in the form of a 2-page text.

Variant 2.
You can solve the task commonly, where your teammates and you share different parts of the topic among yourselves and present to each other in a form of a course. The whole course with all the parts shouldn’t exceed 2 hours.
Each one of you will end up with a 1-page text about your part of the topic and the conclusion from your part of the course. All the materials you used for your part of the course should also be send to your teacher.

Use additional sources if you find it beneficial, especially if you have chosen the variant 2. The origin of additional sources must be noted for control.

1. In order to get a glimpse of what can go wrong in an otherwise thriving society, have a look at this film about what went wrong in Detroit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrUFZrWQRhE
Discuss this film in your group and write down your impressions from the film and include in your writings some ideas about what can be done to bring hope back a broken society.

2. Read file 1 about outsourcing. Part of the problem in Detroit is outsourcing of the car industry. What is outsourcing and why is it done? Why do big companies in Europe outsource the work?

3. Read file 2 about some negative consequences of outsourcing. How will the negative consequences described in this article have influence on the future development of society?

4. Read file 3. Describe some of the problems the young people in southern Europe are facing.

5. Read file 4 about some measures that can help fixing unemployment. Discuss some of the suggestions mentioned in this article. Will they work? Write down your conclusion and give a reason for your opinion.

6. Read file 5 about highly educated young people and what obstacles they are able to overcome in order to have a job and creating a livelihood. Write down some of the good ideas for future work described in the article. Try to be inspired by the creativity if the young people and come up with some further good ideas that might work.

7. Read excerpts of a memo from the European Commission to tackle youth unemployment. Discuss to what degree the measures taken by the EU commission will work. Are they sufficient? Why? Why not?
