Wording:
The task is to study and craft future bodies for how Europe can become Climate Compliant and in what ways people can organize to make it happen.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
This task has a proposal to adopt the slogan “2 Tons for All”, meaning 2 tons of CO2. Why?
Global Warming and Climate Change is already now causing increasingly extreme weather making life on our Globe more difficult. Especially people in poor countries are affected as they are dependent on nature on a day-to-day basis. Poor housing cannot resist violent weather and the natural environment changes so old ways of providing a livelihood become impossible to follow. Droughts, storms, landslides, flooding and rapidly melting ice all disturb traditional occupations, exacerbating poverty and causing loss of life and property.
Also industrialized Europe has suffered loss of life and property due to Climate Change, although on a much less serious scale. For example, our food supplies are not yet threatened and our houses are weather resistant.
The irony here is that the poor countries, who suffer the most, are the ones that have contributed the least to creating the problems.
It is us in the industrialized part of the world, who with our lifestyle of unbridled consumption of goods and unlimited use of transport and energy, are leading so much CO2 into the atmosphere that temperatures keep rising. All people on earth share the same atmosphere. We are in this calamity together.
Old industrial countries like to point to the vast outlet of CO2 from newly arising industrial countries such as India and China, demanding that they “take their share of responsibility” and limit their CO2 outlet. They conveniently neglect the fact that the majority of the goods we consume are produced in the Far East and that they copy our polluting energy technologies. It is therefore the responsibility of old industrial countries to facilitate technology transfer of renewable energy to poor countries.

The bad news about Global Warming and Climate Change is that it is already happening, as described in task about Climate Change.
The good news is that we people have it in our power to counteract it by taking steps to become Climate Compliant. In poor countries Climate Compliance means creating food and energy security, managing resources optimally and building housing and infrastructures that can withstand natural disasters worsened by climate change. Here Richmond Vale Academy in St. Vincent is blazing new trails by leading the Climate Compliance Conference, making the whole country Climate Compliant in 10 years.
In Europe we already have generous supplies of food and energy, stable houses and infrastructures. Rising sea levels and increasing rainfall start to demand action taken, which is for the Governments to do, such as building sea walls. But Governments will not by themselves do what it takes to make Europe Climate Compliant. What does it take?
“In the medium and long term, a world-wide average emission of maximum 2 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per person per year must be targeted. This amount is nowadays considered to be the maximum allowed quantity for a sustainable living on earth”. http://timeforchange.org/CO2-emissions-by-country
Various other sources agree to this.
To become climate compliant in Europe we need to develop modern lifestyles with reduced CO2, so we stop endangering the future of our planet. 2 tons CO2 per person could be a good target. All European countries are well above this figure.
The emission of an average Dane is 12.8 (2012). The emission of an average Tvind person in 2013 was 4.7 with food weighing in most heavily. If we include DNS’s clothes collection in Münster, we end on -13 tons, meaning we save more CO2 than we emit.
Most countries in Africa are below 1 ton. The US figure is 19 tons. Besides lowering our CO2 footprint as an example to follow, Europe should also support poor countries in areas such as tree planting and renewable energy, assisting them in getting food and energy security in climate compliant ways.

In this task you are going to decide how to practise a modern way of life and mobilize others to do the same, including national and international agencies. You will get the tools to estimate CO2 footprints and get examples of organisations, Governmental and NGOs, you can put pressure on or work with.
You will be taking up the Challenge of the Century.
Directive:
The task is set to 8 hours.

Read the introduction and the questions and make sure you understand the overall aim of the task.
Read ALL the files.

How to use this task:
Variant 1.
You can solve the task individually by answering all the questions in the form of a 2-page text.

Variant 2.
You can solve the task commonly, where your teammates and you share different parts of the topic among yourselves and present to each other in a form of a course. The whole course with all the parts shouldn’t exceed 2 hours.
Each one of you will end up with a 1-page text about your part of the topic and the conclusion from your part of the course. All the materials you used for your part of the course should also be send to your teacher.

Use additional sources if you find it beneficial, especially if you have chosen the variant 2. The origin of additional sources must be noted for control.

The steps to take:

Read the whole instruction, so you can see where the steps are taking you.

Read the introduction and the file: “How to be Climate Compliant in Europe”. Discuss the points-of-view. Do you think this is a campaign to go for? Do you have other or more ideas? -1 hour

Find out what the carbon footprint is in the country you are residing in and what your own CO2 footprint is. Then make a brainstorm with fellow students and decide if there are any practices in your own life you want to change to move towards climate compliance. -1 hour

Read excerpts from the book by Naomi Klein: “This Changes Everything”, 2014. (Excerpt of 19 pp + notes in files) -1 hour

Watch the film: “Our Climate our Challenge” and read about the Climate Compliance Conference in St. Vincent. (Links under “Files”) – 1 hour

Decide together with your group in which areas you will be active in the community. Which organization, NGO, group of people or school will you work with? Should you start your own community group, such as a city gardening group? Are there tree planting projects to join? Do you go for supporting initiatives to support poor countries? How many people do you want to reach out to? Use the links under “Files” and do your own research. Make contacts and agreements. - 1 hour

Make a power-point presentation or any other presentation with for example pictures, drama, poetry, songs etc. to illustrate the urgency and necessity of the goal. You may create a logo for a badge for the campaign saying “2 Tons for All”, such as The Smiling Sun, the anti-nuclear symbol designed in Denmark. (See file) - 2 hours

Give the presentation as part of an event or action such as open house, sales in a clothes shop, local environment and energy conference, garden farming event, theme day in a school, or .... Send a description of the presentation to the teacher. - 1 hour

F.
