Title:
Wording:
The task is to plan together with your productive unit an action that promotes Garden Farming and carry it out in the community.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
When you produce food in organic garden farms you can skip poisoning the land and the products you produce and even yourself as a farmer! Pesticides are poisons.

Hunger catastrophes in rural farming communities can be avoided or reduced when small farmers garden farm with a big variety of crops year round fitting to the season. Families in the community can through Garden Farming become independent of the global food consumer market where prices constantly go up when you need to buy while the small producers still get the same price for his product.

Farming on small plots of land primary for own and local consumption enables a much more intensive and much less harmful food production than the farming methods of the large farms or agribusinesses.

The soils can be made fertile again, water and wastewater can be used much more efficiently, a great diversity of crops can be achieved, which again improves the diversity of other living organisms and the biological balances. There are many reasons to garden farm; garden farming provides healthy food independently from the present industrial food production that results in food containing poisons, produced with an excessive use of energy and water and transported long distances. By producing locally the contribution to global warming can be reduced or even eliminated depending on the farming methods. Garden farming also reduces the dependency on the large agribusinesses and strengthens self- reliance in local communities.

Consider how you can mobilize and organize the community to improve food security and to spread knowledge about the multiple benefits of doing Garden Farming.

Decide what information and knowledge you need to provide for the community, for you to be able to mobilize them to start Garden Farming. For example: Why and how Garden Farming provides food security, how Garden Farming protects the land and saves water, the nutritional benefits of Garden Farming, the need to rely on own forces in securing the community and its people not least in times of rising food prices and global warming.
Directive:
Before planning your action make sure you have completed the task in this section called “Garden Farming”.
Now it is time to plan and implement a small action in the community!

It is up to you to decide the methods and goals of your action. There are many ways we can work to promote and establish Garden Farms. What would be good for you and your project to do now depends on if you already have established Garden Farms together with people in the community or if this activity will be new for the community or for your project.

Here comes some examples:

Spreading awareness about all the benefit of Garden Farming through community meetings.

Mobilizing the local school to run a Garden Farm and start the Farm by making the space ready and sowing the first crops together with teachers, children and parents.

Making small herb gardens or planting herbs in planting pots (If you have no access to land) that can strengthen the immune system.

Making a Farm Demonstration Day in a Garden Farm that you have already established – showing the products, giving information etc.

Planting a bed of Moringa together with the community to improve the nutrition of children in the community.

Anything else that you can think of that would be a good way to promote Garden Farming.
