The task is to get the basics in place about our Solar System, to get a grasp on the issue of the size of it and how the movements of its objects can be understood and seen on the night sky.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
In the centre of the solar system is the Sun with its nine planets circling around the Sun in different distances. The Earth is the third planet counting from the sun. The Sun is basis for all life on earth. If the Sun stopped to shine, the Earth would in a matter of months be a frozen uninhabitable ice‐ and stone‐world. Through the whole history of mankind the Sun has been recognized and worshiped as the source of life.

The ways for different cultures to make rituals to secure the Sun’s daily tour over the sky are numerous. Throughout all known history, observations have been made to predict the coming of the seasons.

The Moon is not a source of energy as the Sun is; the moon is illuminated by the rays of the Sun. The moon has also been worshiped and often as a symbol of fertility, probably because the female periods follow the month cycles.

The Moon gives us light in the night, it creates the tide in the oceans, and the moon’s phases are an ancient way of measuring the time.

In ancient days people thought that the Sun and the Moon were bodies that traversed over sky from the East to the West. At that time people used to think that the Earth was flat, and was amazed that the Sun always managed to return the following morning and rise in the East. When it became knowledge that the Earth is round, people thought that the Sun traveled around the Earth.

Now in our time we know that it is the Earth that rotates and the Sun is fixed.
The Earth is moving around the Sun.

Even though many people have heard of this, it is still very difficult to get a clear picture of our Solar System. First, because it is so huge compared to us, human beings on Earth. And secondly because we are not used to thinking in three dimensions and how objects such as planets and moons move around in space over time.

Here is then an opportunity to not only get the basics in place about our Solar System, but also to get a grasp on the issue of the size of it and how the movements of its planets and moons can be understood and seen on the night sky.
Directive:

Read the file about the Solar System.

Find information on the sizes of the 8 planets in relation to each other, and their distances from the Sun.

Use this information to determine and describe how you can use objects at your DNS or other place to describe the location and size of the planets and the distances in the solar system.

Find out which planets you can see in the night sky right now and describe how you can use your model to explain why you only see some of them at a time.

Tick off on your list/website that you have done the study task, and if you choose so, send the explanations to your tutor for possible comments.
