The task is to study production and superstructure of the slave society, and about the Roman Empire with its struggles between master and slave, its slave state, its slave uprisings and the fall of the empire.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

A slave is someone owned by another person whom he must serve. In ancient Rome a slave was called "servus" which is now used as slave.

Slave was used in Medieval times about persons from Slavic countries in Eastern Europe as these were often captured as slaves.

Slavery is illegal in the world today, but it exists. Obviously there are no official statistics but it is estimated that at least 4 million people are held as slaves often as prostitutes or as forced labor in farms or factories. Many more people are held in something does not fit the definition of slavery but is pretty close.

Historically there have been slaves as long as written records exist i.e. more than 5000 years, but archeological excavations of graves show that slavery must have existed Egypt already 10,000 years ago after the introduction of agriculture.

In historical materialism a slave society is defined as a society where slavery is the dominant production relation. The slave works for the master and what he produces is controlled by the master. As slave societies develop they develop a superstructure i.e. a system of ideas and institutions that fits the productive relations and supports the interest of slave owners.

Hammurabi's Code is one of the oldest known laws. 3800 years ago it stated that anyone helping a slave to escape his plight could be punished by death. This is a typical element of the superstructure of a slave society.

In the History Front text you will read more about how slave societies were formed, how slaves rebelled against their conditions and how slave society in Europe eventually came to an end.

In the text by Michael Parenti you will read about the relations between slave and masters in ancient Rome, a topic to which most historians pay little attention.
