Introduction:

A feudal society is a society where land ownership is of dominant importance. The word comes from the Latin "feudum" which means land held by a lord who is obliged to serve the king either by providing soldiers for his armies or by paying taxes. The term was invented 400 years ago to describe the European society after the fall of the Roman empire in the 5th century.

The feudal era in Europe was characterized by a great many wars between kings and involving feudal lords who dominated society. When Karl Marx analyzed feudal Europe he pointed out that whereas slavery was dominated by ownership of people, ownership of land was the dominant productive relation in feudalism.

Feudalism was also established in North Africa and could be found in Asia and Latin America although the type of land ownership and the relation between kings and land owners often was different. Therefore the feudal society described by Karl Marx was mostly a European system.

One of the results of the wars of feudal Europe was that land owners became a class of war lords that spent much of their time developing fighting skills, military techniques and militaristic attitudes. These nobleman skills came to use when Portuguese and Spanish ships sailed to Africa, Asia and Latin America where both Iberian nations established large overseas empires aggressively using fire arms, horses and metal armor to get their way.

Feudalism in Europe eventually came to an end as the dominant social system after capitalism had emerged. However, near feudal production relations between the landowner and those who work his land still exist in many parts of the world where wealthy farmers with large land holdings continue to exploit poor farm workers.

Today the word feudal is also use as a derogatory term to describe something that is rural, backwards and old fashioned, but in historical materialism it has the precise meaning that you will read more about in the text, whereas the film will show how merchant capitalists eventually challenged the power of Europe's feudal landlords.
