Introduction:
After World War I, war was fought against Russia and in 1923 the German economy collapsed in hyperinflation so rapid that money lost all value. But then things looked bright for a while. The global economy improved as countries were rebuilding after the wars. But in 1929, an economic crisis began in the USA that became the most severe of the 20th century.

During the 1930s, there was very high unemployment in Europe and USA. Many people went hungry. As anger rose workers increased their demands and threatened the very system of capitalism. To avoid mass unrest governments gave in and introduced welfare systems such as health care for the poor, pensions for the old and sick and large construction projects that provided jobs to many unemployed workers.

The crisis hit hard on Germany. Here the big business supported the Nazi Party led by Adolph Hitler. They won many votes in elections but never a majority but aided by armed gangs of Nazi supporters they took power and established a dictatorship that pronounced that the German race was superior to all others and rightfully should rule the world. The actions of the Nazis led to war in Europe.

At the same time Imperial Japan invaded and occupied large parts of China. Germany and Japan joined in an alliance and local wars became World War II that was fought in Asia, the Pacific, Europe and North Africa. England mobilized millions of soldiers from Africa and India to help fight the war in Europe. The turning point in the war came when Germany invaded the Soviet Union where some of the fiercest battles took place. 20 million Soviet citizens were killed but they managed to stop the advance of the German Army before they reached strategic oil fields at the Caspian Sea north of Iran. After entering the war to fight Germany and Japan, the US president launched a secret project to produce a nuclear bomb. This horrific weapon was ready in the summer of 1945 when the Japanese emperor wanted to surrender, but before he did so USA dropped two nuclear bombs on August 6 and 9 over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two cites were burned to ashes and killing 150,000 in the fires that followed. Over the next months an equal number died from radiation sickness due to radioactive fall out from the bombs and over the following decades many more died from cancer brought about by the radiation.

During World War II, the communist Red Army in China and its former adversary the right wing Kuomin-tang had fought side by side against the Japanese invaders. After the war a coalition government was discussed but USA did not want any communists in the Chinese government and Kuomin-tang stopped the discussions. In 1946, civil war broke out again and this time the Red Army was making swift advances. In 1949, the Chinese revolution succeeded and the Mao Tse Tung, the communist leader became president of China.
In 1947, England had been forced to give up control of India and across the world movements were established to end colonial rule and imperialist control.
