Introduction:
The ruling party of the Soviet Union did and the ruling party in China does call themselves communists. Communism is a not too well understood concept.<br /> <br /> The concept was used by Karl Marx in 1848 during a period of rebellions in Europe, when he published the Communist Manifesto. Here he argued for revolution against the capitalist order and for the establishment of socialism. His document had a strong impact and established him as a leading revolutionary thinker of his time – and someone who is still studied.<br /> <br /> Communism he mentioned only in passing as the social system that eventually could be established after socialism. His interest was in ending capitalism – but the ideal of a communist society has been contemplated by many socialists/communists.<br /> <br /> The Soviet communist party established a socialist system but took little interest in moving towards a communist society. The Chinese communist party has more or less abandoned the idea and has opened up the party for wealthy capitalists as they claim there are no longer any social contradictions in China.<br /> <br /> Those who dislike socialism believe that communism is an extreme dictatorial version of socialism, but within historical materialism communism has a definition it goes like this:<br /> <br /> Socialism is the society where everybody works according to ability and is rewarded according to effort.<br /> Communism is the society where everybody works according to need and is rewarded according to need.<br />
