Introduction:
Let’s become aware of the context of this principal by listening to what Elisa experienced when she was a 10-year old child learning to read at school:

I read a fairytale. It was a miracle for me. I do not know how to explain it. I cannot find words to express the feeling that I had in that moment. It was an amazing discovery. I read a fairytale alone, I understood the story and from that moment on I started to devour all the storybooks that I saw on my parents’ bookshelf. It was a really special adventure for me. And after I read, I liked to tell the stories to my friends. One day my grandmother noticed my thirst for reading and gave me some money to buy books. The bookshop was close to my house so I went out running to buy children’s storybooks.

“The more you know, the more you want to know.” This is what happened to Elisa. This may be a very simple way of putting it, but if you understand that learning is based on motivation, you start to really realize that the first motivation that led you to search for knowledge led you to that knowledge, but at the same time, the knowledge that you gained motivated you to want to know more. You ask for more, as you know more.

Why? Because during learning your brain is active and connections between brain cells become more active, causing your brain, mind and thoughts to actively work. You want to know more, you want to deepen your knowledge. This does not only happen to you as a student but also to scientists.

In studying this principle you should focus your attention on using knowledge to motivate you and your students to learn. Enjoy.
