Introduction:
“All of us are here together”. The DRH schools students are a good example of this.

Generally they are together when they learn and when they practice something based on what they have learnt. From morning until night you can see that they are participating in group activities.
It is rare to see a DRH school student working in isolation on something.
Even if the work is individual, they ask for others’ opinions and sit close together around a table with two, three or more students. Each student carries out his or her own work, but thestudents are always exchanging opinions with the others.

They are, as such, learning that creation of development comes from a group effort and that cooperation is very important. You are also a DRH school student, you know what we are talking about, so, as a teacher you are left with a challenge: teach your students to follow the same track.

Let's discuss this subject a little further. You know from experience that schools traditionally promote inequalities between pupils. You only need to look at a subject grade report to see what appears to be a declaration of inequality. Earlier on, schools often trained an elite group of special individuals, distanced from the people; there was competition among the pupils to be the best, so there was also individualism; I alone. Today, teachers promote a spirit of interaction and collaborative learning among students.

How can you promote this cooperative spirit? Apart from the experience that you have from the school and that you can use with your students, we will present some ideas to inspire you:

Your class should be organised into trios that work well;
The trios should work on the basis of interaction among students, applying mutual learning and teaching;
The trios should take on learning as a collective project; everyone in the group should learn successfully;
Eliminate any competitive attitudes in your class; the “best” student should be the one who learns from others and helps others to learn;
Always carry out group activities that create a spirit of cooperation.

In this way you can, in a practical manner, teach cooperation skills to your students. They will use this experience that they develop many times throughout their lives, in their professions and in other parts of their life.

This task allows you to develop your understanding of this topic and awaken your professional conscience about cooperation.
Enjoy.
Directive:

Read page 97 in “DNS in Africa”;

Can you find one example which proves the wording of the task wrong, and convince your fellow students that as an individual you can cope very well in life and reach far and good? If yes, mention it and defend your idea.

Arrange a panel-debate in your class where two fellow students represent each their point of view pro and con;

Stop the debate after 10 to 15 minutes and draw up the conclusion for the whole class on “are you better off alone or together”;

Relate the conclusion of the debate to the value of learning how to cooperate with other people, and to teach the students at the small schools the same skills. Make a short summary of the process and send it to your teacher
