Introduction:
“The things you learn should be put to use”. For those of you in the DRH schools, this means that the things that you are learning should benefit others; the primary school children and the community.

As each one of us knows through our own experience, when we teach a specific topic or skill to other people, our own knowledge in relation to this topic or skill is increased.

For example, in primary schools, there are teachers that know how to exploit mutual learning among pupils. Mutual learning means that children learn from each other. Teachers from large classes often apply mutual learning. So how does it work?

The children sit in small groups in a circle. The teacher presents the topic and the task to be carried out. In groups, using the schoolbook for that subject, they study: read, do the exercises and afterwards each group presents their results. Sometimes, the groups ask each other questions – there is a quiz. Each pupil has their own rhythm but all should learn; that is the motto. There is a lot of cooperation among pupils. Because of this method, some pupils create study groups in their villages or neighbourhoods. Success is evident when the teacher’s teaching is complemented by mutual learning.

You can easily understand that teaching what you have learnt benefits not only others, but also means everyone can learn by exploring the knowledge that already exists in their nearby environment. For instance, someone saw from the grade report of a maths class that some of the grades were very low. He asked: But how is it possible to have such low grades in a class where some of the pupils have a lot of knowledge about the topic? Why didn’t they give any attention to the other pupils?

Within the framework of your development project, you may teach other groups of people about various subjects, for example, literacy, adult education and life skills.

This task is a good opportunity for you to deepen your critical thinking about “The things you learn should be put to good use.”
Enjoy.
