Introduction:
“You have to be mobile, and then you will encounter many things.” Mobility means moving, traveling to other places where you will see, right there, other people, other landscapes, other cultures, other languages and much more.

My cousin Zimola was born and grew up in a rural area very far from the cities. When he reached adolescence, his brother who worked in the city of Beira, took him to get to know the city. Zimola, unable to hide his emotion, told me the following:

From very far away we started to see the lights from the highest buildings. I could not take my eyes off that set of twinkling lights. I stood up on the boat until we arrived. The boat arrived at night. The city lit up at night left me open-mouthed, the movement of the cars and the buses; everything was amazing. We arrived at my brother’s home. I couldn’t even sleep, I wanted to go to the centre the next day and see everything.

All of us get this way when we visit an amazing place for the first time.

Getting out of the classroom and going to other places is highly motivating. We have seen the happiness on the faces of the DNS students when they are getting ready to go out on an investigation. Everyone is highly dedicated to preparing for this.

Imagine how lucky you would be if you had a bus that could take all your pupils to Songo, in the Tete province to see the Cahora Bassa dam. How would your class feel after the trip? Very motivated, of course. How much would they learn? A lot.

If you are at a rural school, with no resources to take long trips with your class then you will have to be creative enough to find places that are interesting to visit that are not too far away. You can also visit the school’s neighboring villages. You create a schedule and take the class from the classroom to go and talk to different people, see things, visit carpenters, mills and tailors, hear about how animals are treated. Through this you are teaching pupils that one of the things that they should do in life is to visit different places in order to get to know other realities in this wonderful world.

This task is a good opportunity for you to deepen your understanding of mobility as a learning resource.
Enjoy.
Directive:

What did they/you learn? Could they/you have learned the same in the classroom?

Most people like to travel and see new things, consider why is that and write down your considerations;

Imagine teaching others (it can be children, your team mates, fellow workers, etc.) about “water” in a classroom or an office and down by the small river or well; where will your students learn the most? Write down your findings;

From your answers to questions 2-4, make your own conclusions on the topic.

Send your answers to questions 2-5 to the teacher.
