Time:
hours
Introduction:
"With soaring food costs, one billion people going hungry every day, fast food and junk food causing malnutrition, obesity and health problems, food production based on fossil fuels contributing to Global Warming and Climate Change - with all these problems and more, the question of how to produce and supply healthy food for all is a burning issue of our time.

At our school, students and teachers are involved in food production on several levels and from different perspectives. We study the issues globally and locally, getting the facts and investigating the consequences for ordinary people. What is the cause of obesity epidemic in the western world, and what has happened to food sold in supermarkets, making it unhealthy and deficient in nutrients? What does it mean when giant corporations control food production with profit as their only goal?

We also do Garden Farming as part of our food policy. Like many other people, we choose to act with common sense to grow healthy and fresh greens organically and in sustainable ways for own consumption. We organize ourselves around the work, holding green hours and common actions to the daily and weekly routines.

While working in the school's Garden Farm, learning the skills and know-how of growing different types of vegetables and fruits, companion planting, drip irrigation, composting and natural pest management, the students also learn how to plan and start Garden Farms as an important action when Fighting with the Poor in Africa, Asia or Latin America, and how to solve obstacles such as getting water from irrigation, making compost from local waste materials, growing crops suitable for drought-prone areas, and fighting pests without using harmful poison or expensive fertilizers.

Before every growing season, the Garden Farm is invariably expanded and improved, using the esperiences from the year before. Students and teacher discuss, figure out and evaluate the costs and benefits, advantages and consequences, while making the new year's plan. A greenhouse and seedlings prepared indoors serve to lengthen the season in colder climates.

The harvest from the Garden Farm affords us with the advantage of eating high quality and healthy food for body and brain, as well as using our production to save some of the moneywe would otherwise spend on lower quality produce in stores and supermarkets."

Text from the 24 month program book fighting with the Poor and Pedagogy, in Garden Farming is common sense. p. 115
