Introduction:
The Battle of Ideas is a campaign of hundreds of projects who work on solidarity, social commitment, internationalism and collective effort for the revolution. The background for the campaign starts from the isolation of Cuba as a socialistic country, surrounded by neo-liberalist countries. The country’s radio and TV stations are flooded with anti-revolutionary propaganda. So the battle of ideas, is to actively go against the misinformation. Get yourself educated, get informed, inform and educate others etc. So instead of letting themselves be flooded by foreign antirevolutionary propaganda, the Cuban people, ‘Let the ideas battle with each other’ by their active participation in the spread of education, information and opinion forming.
Directive:

Article and film about education in Cuba.

Conclude upon whether you find the Cuban educational system for the power or for the people. Present your conclusion for the rest of your group in the form of 5 statements which you defend for the group.
(3 hours)

Towards Pedagogy of Tenderness - Reflections on Cuban Education

Discuss the statement from the text: there are no problem children, the problem is at home, in the community or with the teacher. Can this be true? Which kind of human outlook does this represent? How can you relate this to the headline of your studies?

If the result shows that the Cuban scholars learn more than twice as much as their peers from 12 countries. Why do we (other nations) not just adopt the educational system?

Consider the structure: School, family and community all engaged in the education of the children – what do you think about this? Do you have other examples of this?

2. See the film and discuss:

What do you think of this idea to let the ideas battle by the active participation and education of the people?

Despite an economic crisis in Cuba, not a single school was closed and not a single teacher fired. In Denmark 82 schools got closed in 2011 and more to come in 2012. What does this Cuban policy represent and what does it mean to the children and their parents?

Students at the School for Culture, work in the neighbourhoods in order to share their own culture. Students in social work use their second year with the people with problems in the society. What does this meeting the people mean for the students and for the people they meet?

3. Send your answers to your teacher.
