Introduction:
To be economically poor means that you have got little or no money. A very simple solution is then to give money to the Poor so that they are no longer poor.

The rich could do this by simply giving some of the wealth to the Poor. The world’s 1000 billionaires own thousands of billions of US dollars. If they decided to give their money to the Poor 3 billion people in the World, each one could get 100 USD per year for 10 years, meaning that a family of five would get 500 USD per year. This would greatly improve the lot of poor communities around the world.

Now the rich do not do this as they have become rich precisely because they want to keep their money for themselves. Governments, however, have for a long time used this method. Labor unions and socialist movements have demanded that the government support the Poor and in the Western welfare society free education, free health care, pensions for the old, social payments to the unemployed and other systems was able to more or less eliminate poverty.

During the current crisis many of these so-called “benefits” are being cut or even removed in Western countries leading to a new generation of Poor in the rich part of the world.

Most developing countries in the South have had very little government money but have tried to give free health care and education to their people.

Today several countries in the South are using the same methods as the Western welfare societies to reduce poverty. Brazil is the largest example. Its governing party is social democratic with ties to the labor movement. You will study the new Brazilian model in this task.

Other countries have programs that build on the same philosophy. South Africa have various social programs where poor people are paid cash and they have a good effect.
