Wording:
The task is to ponder about whether, and how, it is possible to stop wars. Consider and debate what we as individuals or in groups can do.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
This task is about DARING TO DREAM.
Dare to dream about a world without war.
Well, others have done this before you....philosophers, writers – but not many politicians!
Many of us are busy and occupied with development issues – but all that we build up can easily get destroyed in war, or other acts of violence.
Nations are busy preparing for war, and not many are occupied with preparing for peace. Indeed we all prefer peace – few are really eager to go to war.
How to create a peace-loving race of humans and what are the preconditions? How do we learn to solve conflicts between nations, between human beings? Or between the haves and have nots?
In this task you will hopefully get inspired by reading and listening to the files attached – inspired that actually so many people are occupied with the question, and eager to express themselves about it.
This is one of the big issues of our time – you will as well implement a debate about the question and to ensure that many people have the opportunity to get food for thought and the chance to speak out about their opinions.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 5 hours.

Why are there conflicts between people? Why are there conflicts between nations? Brainstorm with one of your teammates about this and make a list of ten bullet points about this. (30 min)

Read “About the link between individual violence and US policy endless war”. Having read this, consider the question “Are people naturally evil, or does their environment make good people behave inhumanly towards others?” Write your conclusion about this. (30 min)

Read “How to stop a war”. What is the opinion of the soldier and his wife in this piece about how we can stop war? (30 min)

Read “10 things you can do to prevent war”. Summarize what you think are the most relevant things from this list. (30 min)

Read and listen to David Rovics song: “Song for Bradley Manning”. (15 min)

Watch and listen to Tom Lehrer’ singing “We will all go together when we go”. (15 min)

Prepare a 15 minute introduction to a debate about “How we can stop war?” and define three questions to debate. (30 min)

Hold the debate within your team, or at your school, or in your community. (1 hour)

Send your introduction to the debate, and the common conclusions about your three questions from the debate, to your teacher. (30 min)
