The task is to learn about different wars and their reasons, both historically and in present times.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
During history lessons in school we often learn about different wars, mostly of course in the continent where we live. Most often we never learn WHY these wars started, or the explanation was kind of weird, for example the 1st World War started because one man was shot in Yugoslavia in Europe? How could such an incident evolve into millions of people affected by a huge world war?
We could make a list of general reasons for why wars start, and this could be a good starting point for this interesting task, but after that, we need to dig a bit deeper and investigate some wars as examples in order to understand the forces behind wars.
But why? Perhaps right now you and I live in a peaceful country, so we don’t need to worry! The thing is - we are all affected one way or another!
Perhaps there is a weapon factory or a military base nearby my community – thus many people earn their salary there.
The oil I use for electricity comes from the Middle East – where wars have been raging due to securing enough oil for the developed countries.
Or perhaps I have some family members who are traumatized due to participating in war.
The war machine is enormous. We need to understand what takes place and why. Only then can we start to dream about a world without wars – a world where each human life is a treasure.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 5 hours.

Put up your own list of reasons why wars exist.

Put up your own questions – these could include: Can the current capitalist system survive without wars? Can there be a world without war? What are the peace movements doing? Is warfare part of human nature? What is genocide – and why does it happen? Can humanity survive if we do not abolish wars? What is post traumatic syndrome (which was once called shell shock)? Obama claimed when he got the Nobel Peace Prize that some wars are “just” – is there such a thing as a just war?

Choose 3 different wars and try to find answers to your questions. Use the attached files or add from sources online.

Make an introduction to each of the wars (include film clips, photos, data to make it lively) – as an introduction for a debate evening – where you discuss the questions put up. At the debate evening introduce and teach songs from the antiwar movement – e.g. “Lyndon Johnson” and DMK songs.

Make a conclusion of the entire topic and send it to your teacher.

Files:

“Can wars lead to peace?”, History Front chapter 53, Private Edition, printed in India 2009.

Muhammad Ali speaks out against the Vietnam War. cooljustice.blogspot.com, 2009.

Sudan – Genocide in Darfur, Gerard Prunier, LMD.

First it was Saddam, then Gaddafi, on the Libya Intervention, Robert Fisk, 2011. Independent.co.uk.

Howard Zinn: “Just causes not just war”.www.commondreams.org.

“For the Youth” – poem and song by Nordahl Grieg.

DMK song: “We are all against war”.

“Where have all the flowers gone?” song by Pete Seeger.

“Lyndon Johnson told me”, by song Tom Paxton.
