Title:
Wording:
The task is to understand how deforestation and degradation of forested areas destroys the ancient Gaia system of forests being able to absorb and store carbon.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

Deforestation and the transformation of sound forest areas to a forest of secondary growth works against the climate as a double-sided sword.

First, huge amounts of carbon are sent out in the atmosphere as the large trees are being felled to eventually burn or decompose. The same happens with the roots as they rot. Next a great part of the carbon that was stored in the soil disappears into the air, as the soils become depleted of nutrients and life possibilities in the soil are destroyed. All of this contributes to more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and therefore a warmer planet.

The other part contributing to this is that the degraded forest areas lose their ability to absorb the extra carbon. They should be able to build the excess carbon into larger tree trunks, larger root systems, and primarily in rich forest topsoil full of humus (the long-term carbon storage compound in the soil) and living organisms.

But the logged out forests with bulldozer tracks crisscrossing the area and no protective forest cover to reduce the impact of tropical downpours are in no way able to province the much needed service of absorbing excess carbon.
So once again, there is no way out. We will need to find carbon neutral energy production methods and agricultural systems that build up a carbon rich soil.
