The task is to understand some of the essential factors that decide whether meat production will become efficient and profitable, and to be able to explain these factors to others.

Introduction:
A huge part of the world's population never or very seldom eat meat, some because of choice, but most of them because this is simply out of reach for them.<br /> There are many reasons not to eat the industrially produced meat in many countries - filled as it is with antibiotics, growth hormones, and most often mixed up with all kinds of waste to form hamburgers or minced meat where you cannot see what you are really eating. There are many health reasons to cut down on meat consumption and on top of this there is the hard hitting argument that meat production is responsible for a large part of the man-made global warming. This is for a small part because of the methane coming from the stomachs of ruminants (cows, goats, sheep, etc.) but mainly because huge areas need to be used to grow the food for the industrially produced meat - areas that could otherwise have stayed as forests or in other ways accumulated carbon and thus reduced the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.<br /> Proteins, however, are essential for healthy development of all humans and especially during childhood and it are important to find ways to increase protein consumption among the many people of this world that do not get enough.<br /> This task is about producing protein and healthy fats in the form of meat such as chicken and goats, and doing this in ways so the meat is nutritious and healthy, that do not require huge areas of extra land or that contribute to global warming. This is perfectly possible, especially if raising these animals is combined with a Garden Farm. There will be many leftovers from the vegetable production that can be used as feed for the animals, and the compost produced from the animal manure will improve garden production.<br /> It is also useful to see how you can combine having trees with raising animals. There are many leguminous fodder trees - acacias, leucaena, sesbania, etc. - which at the same time improve the soil because of the nitrogen fixing bacteria at the roots, and others such as moringa can produce enormous amounts of leaves for both human and animal consumption.<br /> There are many reasons to start raising animals, one of them being the cash income this also can be able to contribute.<br />

This task is scheduled for 5 hours.<br /> <ol> <li>Read the chapter about nutrition in chicken production, p. 33-39.</li> <li>Read the chapter about nutrition in goat production, p. 28-46.</li> <li>Prepare to write down a speech you can hold for a group of villagers, a school class or others starting meat production, where you for both chicken and goats are able to explain five fundamental things to consider in order to have efficient and profitable meat production.</li> <li>Consider how you can best explain these 2x5 points - by demonstrating directly with live animals, with posters and drawings or in other ways.</li> </ol> Test your speech on some of your colleagues or visitors, include possible improvements and send the speech to your tutor.<br /> <br /> Files:<br /> F1.
