Time:
hours
Introduction:

Where can we have a better life? In the city or the countryside? We will provide our conclusions later. There is a tendency in various countries for people to abandon the countryside for cities and to live, unemployed, in slums. Living in city neighbourhoods is not the solution for development; if we want a good, sustainable life, we should create a modern life in the countryside, to encourage movement from the city to the countryside, because city neighbourhoods are characterised by a lack of urban infrastructure, lack of access roads, and by houses constructed with substandard materials such as cardboard, pieces of wood, and pieces of zinc sheeting.

The lack of urban infrastructure hampers access for the emergency services, such as the ambulance service and fire brigade, among others.

In these types of neighbourhood there are high rates of crime, drug consumption and alcoholism, high rates of disease, deficient sanitation and a lack of healthcare.

According to a 2006 UN-HABITAT report, 327 million people live in this kind of neighbourhood in Commonwealth countries alone.

How do you envision a modern life in the countryside?

Despite the lack of some public infrastructure, the countryside still continues to offer good and varied conditions.

The countryside offers vast tracts of land for farming, a pure landscape that does not yet suffer from transformation by man, life can be active and healthy; communities can coexist, the air is very natural, there is less stress; there is great potential for a natural diet, and there are bigger sites for housing.

Rural populations play a big role in the development of this life, which can be realised with a strong commitment to agricultural production.

It is possible with common efforts and commitment to develop a modern and much better rural life than most rural populations experience today. In this task you get the opportunity to dream and to use your creativity and imagination for how poor rural communities could be changed into low cost modern communities caring for all the basic human needs and a little more.
