Introduction:
To be able to communicate over distance a common language opens up for new possibilities for development, for you and others. When you want to be able to explain how things are working at your place to people in other parts of the world, then a common language is needed.
Historically people could manage with one local language, they were not able to move around in the world since they could only reach as far as their feet could take them. This changed drastically when new innovations made it possible to move from one part of the world to another within hours. Satellites made it possible to reach people with phones and computers within seconds. The globe has become inter-connected and in a sense “smaller” since we are able to contact people in other parts of the world in a way never seen before in history.
To be able to use the opportunities for communication, a common language is needed. English is the most widespread second language in the World, it is spoken by millions of people on each continent.

To learn more English takes efforts – as it takes efforts to learn anything new. You may hesitate and say that it is different to be able to use the language from being in a process of learning and developing a foreign language. Perhaps it is many years since you got your basic training, and you have not been practicing. Perhaps you are not used to speak out. What would others around you think if you have a wrong pronunciation? Perhaps they do not understand at all what you want to say. What an inconvenient situation to be in. However, now is time to change.
With this introduction I want to encourage you to do all this, speak, read, and write. Just do it, even if it is not correct, and ask people around you to correct you. Then of course use all opportunities to improve and learn more. But do not expect yourself to “be perfect” in English from the start. Improvements come with training. If you do not dare to speak, read or write, you will not improve, actually you will go backwards forgetting what you once knew. Find ways to encourage yourself and others to become more active with the language, make smaller groups, use them to read loud for each other to become accustomed to speaking. Correct each other’s English. Write notes on topics to talk about. Put questions and answer each other. Start using your not perfect English! Shortly: “Get out of the pipe!”
Directive:

Write a short speech of your own to your students to mobilise them, for example, praise them for an effort they made, or use any other actual occasion for you to give them a speech. Make it as interesting, humorous and mobilising as you possibly can, and use principles for a good speech.

Get your speech evaluated by a colleague before presenting it.

Give the speech to your students and point out to them why your speech had an important effect.

Make an event with your students where they will need to make eloquent speeches of their own.

See to it that the students prepare good speeches and give them at the event.
