Introduction:

The Poor cannot very often choose to live in places that are good for health.

The Poor in the cities have to find places on least wanted land that no-one else wants. Such land can be on steep, muddy slopes as is the case in many countries in Latin America. When it rains heavily the sides of the slopes at times give in, since they are made of gravel and mud, and people and houses follow in huge mudslides.

Many Poor live close to their source of income. Along many coasts worldwide, poor people live from fishing, which does not require a lot of equipment, only a small boat and a net. Their houses are often built by the shores, which are vulnerable when heavy storms and hurricanes hit. Storms and hurricanes are growing stronger and more frequent as global warming heats up the planet. For a hurricane to form, the ocean water has to reach 24 degrees Celsius, and it becomes stronger when traveling long distances over warm waters.

As the ocean water levels rise because of ice caps melting in Greenland and Antarctica, coastlines and whole cities that lie close to or under sea level, become dangerous places to live. In rich countries such as Holland, where much of the country lies under sea level, the government has built strong walls along the coast to protect the land. In poor countries such as Bangladesh, the government does not have the same resources, and here millions of people live in areas that are often flooded – until they give up and move, but that is not easy as Bangladesh is a small country with 120 million people.

Coastal areas can also be affected by tsunamis, such as in southeast Asia in 2005 where coastlines along the Indian Ocean were hit and 250,000 died.

When earthquakes strike areas where the Poor live, the disaster will claim many human lives. This was the case in Haiti in 2010, where 300,000 people died, as their houses collapsed. Safe houses in earthquake zones must be made with many iron bars in the concrete structures to prevent them from falling. But people who are poor cannot afford such construction. They have to live in the hope that the earthquake will not strike in their area.
