They are physically and emotionally vurnable and they cannot fend for themselves. Though parents living in poverty love their children as much as anyone else they are often left without choices.

The dire conditions of nearly half of the world’s children are deeply related to poverty.
The world has an estimated number of 2.3 billion children under 18.
700 million children are under 5.
1.3 billion live in relative prosperity having clothes, food on table and access to education and adult care. While 1 billion children live in poverty, conflict zones or lack acces to health care, education or the protection of parents.

The phenomenon of street children is growing globally.
Few countries and cities anywhere in the world today is without street children.
Around 150 million children are street children in the world today.
Africa has about 25 million children living in the streets as a result of poverty and poorly functioning social systems.
Street children are also found in rich countries.

In 2006, 10 million children under five died. About half of child deaths occur in Africa. The main causes are diarrhea, pneumonia, malnutrition and measles. One in six children in Sub-Saharan Africa die before their fifth birthday.
Around 1 million families in the world are headed by children. This number is increasing as the AIDS pandemic is taking its toll.

400,000 children become blind every year because of lack of vitamin A, their disability could have be prevented for only a few cents per day.

In the text “Facts about children’s conditions in the world” you will find many more facts.
