Introduction:
You can learn very much about the conditions of the poor by listening to their stories. To learn from them you need to meet them with an open heart and a deep seated interest in them and their conditions.

Here is an example of a portrait of a TCE passionate written down by one of the Field Officers in TCE Guruve.

Ruramai a TCE Passionate from TCE Guruve tells her story
When I visited the HIV Testing Center my heart was beating very fast. It was a matter of knowing my status after a foolish lifestyle. I was not sure whether I was still negative or by now had become positive.
Only after I had been visited by a TCE field officer I got the courage to get to know my HIV status.

I used to live a disastrous life; I used to have four or more sexual partners because I lived in deep poverty, not sure of where to get the next meal. I thought that sex was the only way for me to survive. I thought working as a sex worker was my only option.

The men used to pay more for sex without condoms so I accepted. I also did not have any condoms myself. I used to dance in bars to find my clients. I did not take time to cook food for myself so I survived on take away food.
Once I went to the clinic because I suspected that I had got a sexually transmitted infection. When it was my turn to see the nurse in charge, I lied and said I had a bad headache and I was given some pain killers.
There were many challenges I faced as a sex worker. Some of the clients ran away without paying and in some cases my client would beat me. People were pointing fingers at me in the community. I was lonely, but could see no way out.

One day a Field Officer came to my house. He did not point finger at me. He explained me in detail about HIV and AIDS. With the knowledge I got from the Field Officer I was able to change my life. I am now a changed person even though I am HIV positive. The TCE Field Officer encouraged me to start an incoming generating project and now I have a very big vegetable garden. I plant and sell different vegetables and practice positive living. I want to live longer and healthier. I am now on ARV medicine. I have become TCE compliant. Today I am a very active Passionate in TCE. I mobilize people in the community to get tested and become TCE complaint, especially the other commercial sex workers. I have a condom outlet at my place but before I give them out I tell them how to use them correct.

By Ruramai (TCE Passionate)
