Introduction:

This task you will investigate the situation of two poor families in your area and contemplate what it would take for them to move forward.

From home, you prepare a set of questions in areas such as food, water, clothes, housing, sanitation, health and sickness, deaths in the family, periods of starvation, cash money, production, transport, communication, family network, education, school situation, general knowledge, understanding of rights, employment possibility, perception of the future and ideas for progress.

Implementing the investigation you not only seek answers to your questions, but you also use your eyes and ears to make your own observations of their situation and daily struggle and you come up with more questions if the situation calls for it.

Try to place yourself in their shoes to get an understanding of how they perceive their own situation and possibilities for the future and what their dreams are.

Talk to all the family members and get each their view so you can better form a picture of the entire situation.

Returning home with the answers to your questions and your observations, you go straight to concluding on what is the nature of the families’ daily struggle. How can you explain the evil circle of poverty to the degree that these families do not see a way forward – if that is the case? Then you proceed to formulate what the needed change of situation would require. It could be requirements of new actions mainly carried out by them. It could require assistance from others. What is accessible and doable? These requirements are for you to develop. These first actions should be done without cost, unless you can see the possibility of raising some funds for the actions you deem needed.

Supposing that you have achieved the point of KNOWING what you think should be done as a first step forward, and supposing the situation enables you to go forward together with these families, the next step would be how to mobilize them into action.

This is an intellectual process. It consists of these 3 steps:

1) To KNOW that these actions are the right actions to do in this specific situation 2) To WILL them and use that knowledge in practical action in order to get the reward of the much needed change and

3) to DO and carry out these actions.
The actions might be fully known as right actions, but all or part of them may go against the grip of tradition or be beholden to other fears from the family. That is why the actions must be WILLED, before they can be DONE.
