Wording:
The task is to prepare questions for interviewing people about big issues of our time, to make the interviews and to write a summary of the outcome.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Making interviews is a way to get the pulse of peoples’ opinions on a matter. There are companies doing that as a business and we see the results everywhere.
For example, when there is an election these companies make interviews with a cross section of a population in order to come up with a figure for how many percent a candidate has of the votes.
There are of course many ways to manipulate such statistics and it is also done all the time. But actually, the mathematics behind it is pretty accurate.
We are not out to get a scientifically correct results from making interviews.
Making interviews is an addition to our studies and debates.
We get occupied about an issue – global warming and climate change, poverty in our own country, the power of the media, forces that run the world, or maybe some local issues of importance to peoples’ lives – like oil companies wanting to start fracking.
We get input from books, documentaries, debates with each other – and also by interviewing people in our community to learn what they think and thereby including them and learning from them.
It is an art to make a good interview.
You can make a short and to the point question to start with – “What do your think about fracking?” And you might get an answer like “I am against it” or “It is OK with me” or “What is fracking?”
To get good answers, you need good questions. So be prepared to elaborate, to share what you know about the issue, and ask “did you know….?” questions. Get people to talk!
In this way you get a much broader understanding of where the person stands.
AND finally – making interviews you need to be very precise with the English language.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 10 hours.

Decide the issue you want to make interviews about. It is good to do this task in your team or at least with a few other team mates so you get to talk to many people in a short time.

Discuss what you want to get out of the interviews, who to interview and how to get the most out of the interviews. Formulate the questions. You could decide to test the questions on other participants or teachers at the school.

Get out and make the interviews. Make at least 10 interviews in order to have a variety of people – best to be 5-10 people out making the interviews and each make 10 interviews so you have a bigger collection of 50-100 interviews.

Coming back you organize the answers and make categories. And finalize by making a poster with the results.

Present the poster at the next common meeting.
