Introduction:
The United Nations Millennium Summit (in 2000) was the largest gathering in history of world leaders and it brought together 149 Heads of State and high-ranking government officials from 40 other countries.

The 8 Millennium Development Goals were the concrete result of this Summit. All 192 United Nation member states agreed to achieve the 8 Millennium Goals by 2015. It was a very groundbreaking event never seen before and it gave rise to optimism around the World. With an agreement and commitment from nearly all world leaders to change the plight of the poorest it seemed realistic and maybe even evident that the situation of the poor would improve in the new Millennium. Looking at the situation today there are encouraging developments in some regions most significant in China and Latin America. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are lacking behind. The commitment of the rich countries to help poor countries to achieve the millennium goals seems rather bleak. This has left the poorest countries and people behind.

The 8 Millennium Goals in headlines are:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

With a serious commitment from both rich and poor countries the Millennium Goals could be reached, but the agreement about the MDG goals do not put concrete demands on what the different countries should provide in funds and in actions to achieve them. Since 2000 many other agendas have overshadowed the plight of the poor, like the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the so-called war on terror.
In spite of limited funds the Mozambican government is making an effort in reaching the goals.

Write if you think these graphs show an improvement for the poor - argue for your position pointing to some facts from the graphs.
7. Send to your tutor.
