The task is to learn about the Millennium Development Goals 2 to 7 and to write a short essay on what the government report tells on one of them.

Introduction:
In 1990 the Mozambican president together with 149 other heads of states signed the Millennium Declaration and adopted the 8 Millennium goals.<br /> Mozambique is struggling to reach the Millennium Development goals. Many improvements have been achieved but the country lack own resources and thus very vulnerable to international policies and events. <br /> <br /> Beneath comes an overview of the 8 goals with targets for 2015. Try to guess when you look at them how you think Mozambique is faring on each of the targets. When you read the files you will get the facts about how far Mozambique have reached in achieving the MDG.<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger </strong><br /> * Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day<br /> * Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from Hunger<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education </strong><br /> * Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women </strong><br /> * Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and to all levels of education no later than 2015<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 4: Reduce child mortality </strong><br /> * Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 5: Improve maternal health </strong><br /> * Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases </strong><br /> * Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS<br /> * Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability </strong><br /> * Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources<br /> *Halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water<br /> *By 2020 to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of slum dwellers<br /> <br /> <strong>Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development </strong><br /> * Deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries through national and international measures in order to make debt sustainable in the long term<br /> *In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications<br />
Directive:
<p>1. If possible do this with two or more fellow students.</p> <p>2. Together you choose one MDG for each of you to present to the others.</p> <p>3. Prepare notes for a presentation of what the government report says about the MDG. Include that you explain one or more of the graphs, summaries conclusion and the challenges mentioned in the report.</p> <p>4. Each of you presents one of the MDG and together you discuss your presentations. In the end you make a joint conclusion for each of the MDGs.</p> <p>5. Make a 1-2 page essay about the MDG you have presented and add a conclusion for each of the other MDGs presented and send it to your tutor.</p>
