Wording:
The task is to get an understanding of the links between climate change and social conflicts and how such conflicts are already taking place around the globe.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

When economists, scientist and politicians are presenting their views on the costs of Global Warming, they include the costs of less agricultural production, land and installations destroyed by rising sea levels and stronger hurricanes, the cost of environmental refugees, of having less freshwater, of having diseases spreading into new areas, etc., etc.

But very few are talking of the costs of the social conflicts that will rise in the wake of Global Warming. The fact is that it is not very hard to imagine the millions of Nigerian youths at some stage rising in protest against living in an apparently rich country, but where 85 million people are still living on less than 1 dollar per day, and no signs of this figure decreasing.

The climate changes will for sure make it more difficult to grow crops and to get water for irrigation or animals. Without a government taking a stand to improving conditions and creating development, the situation can much too easily slip into a destructive revolt by people without any visible future.

We saw in Northern Africa how fast developments can happen. In the case of Libya, we saw how fast destruction of huge values could take place.

We are seeing now, how the chaos created by the war in Libya is spreading to countries such as Mali, Mauretania and Niger.
The changes in this region were not primarily driven by Global Warming, but demonstrates examples of what can happen when there is no leadership tackling the urgent issues. And adapting to Global Warming is surely an issue any leadership needs to tackle.
Directive:

1)Read the texts

2)Prepare a speech for a morning assembly or for a class on how social conflicts will increase due to climate change, if possible with examples or future scenarios from your region, and get your listeners to discuss and suggest what is needed to avoid such conflicts.

3) Hold the speech, write down the main points of your suggestion and send to your tutor.
