Wording:
The task is to learn about new developments in medicine, what consequences such developments can have for the well-being of people and to discuss what it will mean for humanity if it becomes possible to live for hundreds of years.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Why are some human beings capable of living beyond 100 years of age? What do they have in common?
In theory we could actually live forever, if we just maintained our cells and organs, as we can maintain a car and change the broken parts.
Now, scientists have found the specific gene, which improves the likelihood of a long life – and due to genetic inheritance, some even have three times bigger chances of living a very long life.
New medical science is working with exchanging body parts – e.g. liver, kidney and heart with brand new body parts made from our own cells, so the new parts will be accepted by the immune system. This technology is just decades, perhaps even just years ahead.
Even if we might wish to live forever, it is not practical – there is simply not space for so many people on this planet. In order to preserve thoughts and memory, some scientists are working with creating avatars, which are digital copies of a human being.
All this is going on – and has been going on for years – with great possibilities for our future. Look forward to interesting films and readings about this issue.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 8 hours.

Read in the pamphlet "Progression of humanity through technological development" and go through the power point presentation on health. Own production.

Watch the video "the Immortals"

Watch part of the video by Michio Kaku on the biotechnological revolution and medical advances.

Discuss about the issues raised about living to a very old age, and make a list of the factors to consider, especially in terms of personal lifestyle, if want to live till an old age. Are you ready to change some of your behaviors in order to live longer?

Make five statements about what it will mean for humanity if it becomes possible to live for hundreds of years.

Send your statements to your teacher.

Links to the videos:
1/ Living forever - The Immortals: https://topdocumentaryfilms.com/immortals/
2/ Visions of the future by Michio Kaku: https://topdocumentaryfilms.com/visions-future/ (focus on part 2)
