The task is to learn about the investigation of and the first steps into space, the possibilities and challenges space presents, and the possibility of a human colony on Mars.
Time:

Introduction:

Could it be that there will be human colonies on Mars before this century has passed? It is not unimaginable, but even more futuristic is the vision of making Mars habitable. Envision that humans would be able to live in a natural environment on Mars, not in a closed space station placed on the planet.

The difference between the two is huge. In the first case humans will live under conditions that are controlled within a quite limited space. This can be compared to the Biosphere II project here on Earth, where 8 volunteers stayed for two years inside a structure of just over 1 hectare. Biosphere showed that scientists still have a lot to learn to be able to actually control the environment and be able to copy the delicate balances existing in nature. But this is certainly within reach within the next decades, so that structures could be brought or constructed on Mars, organisms brought with spaceships and eventually people would be able to live in these structures.

When we are talking making Mars habitable, it is a totally different scale, also in time. This is called terraforming - creating a planet with temperatures, water and atmosphere fit for numerous of our planet's organisms.

A first step needs to be to increase the temperature. Humans have (unfortunately for most people on Earth) very good experiences in doing this. It would be relatively simple to produce some potent greenhouse gases that over some decades would bring temperatures up to a level where the huge amounts of frozen CO2 would start to melt (at -70º). This would further accelerate the process, just as CO2 does on planet Earth, and before long the frozen water in the soil would start to melt.

Next step would then be to introduce species that would be essential to the global nutrient cycles (unless some of them prove to be there already, lying dormant in the frozen Martian soil). Hopefully, scientists at this stage have a thorough knowledge of Gaia mechanisms, and will be able to "compose" sets of organisms that could establish a balanced Martian Gaia. Scientists will then also be able to create living organisms with the desired traits, and why should Mars only be for the traditional Earth species?
It will probably take some trial and error before the right balances are achieved, but within some centuries one can imagine humans wandering about on a live red planet or looking up at Earth through their telescopes.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 5 hours.

Read the articles about space exploration in the pamphlet “Observing the Universe” by Christian Fenger.

Decide what you think about using funds on space exploration.

Watch the documentary Mars - making the new Earth (2017)

Make an introduction to the film and set up 5 questions to be discussed in connection with it.

Show the film, for example to other students and discuss the issue.

Send your answers to point 4-5 to the tutor.

Link to the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_50N5QoQoc4
