The task is to study the forces in history that have been driving development as seen from a historical materialist and an environmentalist view point.

<ol> <li>Each student makes the first task about Historical materialism “Two ways of understanding history”, discuss in study groups and send to your tutor (4 hours)</li> <li>All watch the history book films 1-6 – (2 hours) <em>(need not be all in one go)</em></li> <li>a. The team divides the remaining 10 tasks about historical materialism and divides them among the study groups. (If there are 4 groups it is done like this: Group A: task 2+3+7, Group B: task 4+8+11, Group C: task 6+9, Group D: task 5+10). (10 hours)</li> </ol> b. When all have finished their first task the groups present to each other so as to build a picture of the entire historical process. (5 hours)<br /> c. Each student sends answers to the tasks made by their group (3 hours)<br /> d. Each student writes a 4 page summary of how society developed through time according to historical materialism and the main factors that provoked change (4 hours)<br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> 4. Presentation by the teacher of the main points of Gun, Germs and Steel as an alternative to historical materialism, this could be called an environmental theory of history. She then shows the Diamond films about Latin America and about Africa. (3 hours) The team concludes on what they now have learnt about different views on history and write an experience about this.(1 hour)</div>
