Introduction:

As you immerse yourself in your work and life at DNS you make many observations. You learn from what you are doing.

Scientific investigations are based on observation. As observations are recorded and analyzed they enable the researcher to conclusions based on facts/data gathered.

In the daily life you do not plan observations and record only if you keep a diary or log. In the social sciences there are many traditional ways of observing and recording. The scientist can conduct interviews using questionaires. These can be in person or sent by mail or Internet. She can observe at a distance so as not to be noticed, search for information in books, letters and Internet conversations.

The researcher can also make observations while being part of a group. This method is called “participant observation”. Usually the social scientest try not to influence the group or society under observation so as to get a “truthful” picture of reality. This is often the ideal of an antropologist who travel to live among an isolated jungle tribe to learn about their society. He tries not “disturb” the social life. The same method could be used observing a school. The researcher would sit quietly in corner pretending to be a “fly on the wall”.

There is, however, another tradition within research that holds that it is the role or even the obligation of the “researcher” to influence the group/society/school for the better. This method of investigation is called “action research”. Here the researcher has as a goal to be part of a group and from this position together with the other people to work for changing the group. A teacher who cares for his school, his students and community and therefore is an activist striving for improvements can use “action research” as a method.

As this investigation task lasts only one week you can only initiate smaller changes through your investigation. But it is useful for you to decide if you want to be a “neutral” observer as the “fly on the wall” type of scientest or if you want to use your investigation to change things at the school where you work.

Directive:

DAY 1.

Read the chapter from the DNS book about investigations

1. Taking your starting point from the main issues at the school where you work, the main aim is to dig deep to formulate a relevant and inspiring headline for an investigation. Use your work as a teacher and your deliberations with teachers, students and others…

Eg:

a) How do people really learn?

b) Who is governing the school?

c) The school in the society

d) What is a good teacher?

e) No food no studies can we implement garden farm in all schools?

f) ………. ¨

Make the headline substantial and with many facets, and crafting the questions you want answered.

2. Make a list of questions that you want answered in your investigation

3. Make a plan for your investigation period with goals of how many and, which people you will talk to. How will you go about observing in which way the headline influences the daily life of the people around you? Decide how you want to carry out the practical tasks of investigation.

DAYS 2-4:

The investigation.

1. Carry out interviews. Be efficient and concrete in your questions so that people understand what you want from them.

2. Arrange time for observation and other activities related with investigation. Make notes and take pictures during your observation, that you can use when writing your thesis and to make a presentation.

3. At the end of the day, conclude the results of the investigation activities, did you achieve your goals? What is missing?

4. Collect all materials from your investigation day.

5. Discussing your findings with your Trio and the Teacher Council, and end with a rich and inspirational thesis to post in the OWU Digital Showroom and present at the People’s Exam.

The thesis should include:

- Topic of the investigation;

- Place and conditions of investigation;

- Subject of your investigation;

- What was the aim of your investigation?

- What kind of methods did you use?

- Interview results/ statistics;

- Observation results/ analyze;

- Conclusions;

- Future perspectives.

DAY 5:

Organize a presentation of your investigation results at a People’s Exam in your school.

1. Formulate statements and make posters to illustrate the main ideas of the investigation.

2. Involve people in discussions and debate about the topic of your investigation. Get feedback about your educational investigation.

3. Describe future perspectives of the topic, according to the results of investigation.

4. Agree with the leadership at the project if some of the elements from your investigation will be implemented in the coming period... If so, make a plan that includes yourself and others at the school.

Send all products to your tutor.
