Wording:
The task is to understand the basics of the carbon cycle, how Gaia closely regulates the amount of CO2, thus controlling the temperature and how large amounts of carbon have been stowed away through actions of living systems.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Human interference in the carbon cycle will actually mean life or death to billions of people during the next decades as the planet heats up. So you better know the facts behind this vital cycle and understand what changes are necessary to eventually reduce the carbon dioxide levels again and thereby global temperatures.
The carbon cycle is also a good example of how crucial living organisms have been and still are in the system to regulate global temperatures.
From the files you will learn how a warmer world will increase erosion of rocks and soil and thus result in more carbon buried in the crust and less carbon in the atmosphere. On the contrary a colder world will mean less erosion and since volcanoes continuously release carbon dioxide, the content of this in the atmosphere will gradually grow and thus prevent more and more heat from escaping to space (the greenhouse effect).
Life, however, speeds up these processes by many factors, since erosion is much more efficient when there are roots and organisms moving between the soil particles and when microorganisms release acids that break down soil particles. The living planet is much faster in regulating global temperatures.
When we say fast, this is still on a planetary scale of tens of thousands of years. There is no way that this Gaia system can prevent the present global warming caused by an outpour of greenhouse gases produced primarily by burning fossil fuels, cutting down the forests and running a kind of agriculture that reduces instead of builds up a carbon rich soil.
